Learning Outcome 2: Integration/Evidence
For learning outcome 2, I chose my Big Data essay. Learning outcome 2 states that writers should be able to integrate sources and be able to explain and relate them to your main argument and claims. For my Big Data essay, I used quite a few sources in order to get my point across. A specific example of how I integrated a source was in my second paragraph when I discussed a researcher who developed algorithms to enhance the speed at which medical big data would be received. In that paragraph specifically, summarization was the way to integrate the source because the source had so much detail and was a research paper. Another example of me demonstrating learning outcome 2 was when I integrated direct quotes into my essay. Here is my specific example of direct quoting from my essay:
It may seem like big medical data is the most cutting edge tool to only enhance the way the world of medicine functions, but it doesn’t come without its downsides. Chris Anderson, quoted in Bottles’ article mentioned previously, pointed out that “data sets can uncover actionable correlations without deep understanding of the problem” (qtd. in Bottles 9).
I feel that the signal phrase was strong here and lead the reader into the next topic without confusing them. Although in my first draft I had very little “they” say, I revised and made the evidence part of my essay much stronger with framing statements and integration of the source into the paragraph/paper.
